The Skinny Pen is an effective way to help you control your weight – containing the prescription drug Saxenda, it is a once-daily injection that you administer to yourself to aid weight loss. Saxenda contains the active ingredient Liraglutide, which is like the naturally occurring hormone, GLP-1. The injection works by reducing hunger pangs, slowing down the emptying of your stomach and giving you a ‘fuller’ feeling for longer.
The drug is approved in the UK to help you lose weight when used in a conjunction with an active lifestyle and a balanced diet. Exercise and diet are an important part of looking and feeling good – the Skinny Pen Daily may help you further maximise results.
During your consultation, we will ask questions about your medical history, weight goals and history with weight loss before prescribing the medication and to ensure that Saxenda is the right choice for you.
The Skinny Pen comes in the form of an injection pen filled with 3ml of Saxenda. We show you how and where to administer the injection, which you will then continue to do at home on a daily basis, gradually increasing the daily dose as you adjust to the medication.
Saxenda has been studied quite extensively in multiple clinical trials and evidence clearly shows that more than twice as many patients achieved 5% and 10% body weight loss compared to diet and exercise alone.
Although Saxenda is safe for many people to use, there are link with thyroid cancer that you should be aware of. The drug is approved for use, but it is not fully understood why some people have the potential to develop these types of cancers. During your consultation, we will need to discuss your medical history and family history to assess if Saxenda is the best treatment for you.
Saxenda is only to be used as weight-loss treatment by people who have previously tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise alone. There are also certain medical conditions, such as type 1 diabetes that will mean you aren’t a suitable candidate. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take the drug. Again, this will all be discussed on your initial consultation.
