What is Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating beyond what is necessary to regulate body temperature. It can affect various areas of the body, including:

  • Underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis)
  • Hands (palmar hyperhidrosis)
  • Feet (plantar hyperhidrosis)
  • Face and scalp (craniofacial hyperhidrosis)

Excessive sweating can impact confidence, daily activities, and emotional well-being.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Botulinum Toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands. This significantly reduces sweating in the treated area while allowing the body to sweat normally elsewhere.

Who can have this treatment?

Botulinum Toxin for hyperhidrosis may be suitable for you if:

  • Other treatments, such as prescription-strength antiperspirants, have not worked.
  • You are generally in good health with no conditions that could interfere with treatment.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.

What to expect during treatment
  • The treatment area will be cleansed.
  • A fine needle is used to inject botulinum toxin just under the skin in a grid-like pattern.
  • The procedure takes around 20–30 minutes and requires no downtime.
  • You can return to most activities immediately after treatment.

Aftercare Advice

To ensure the best results, follow these aftercare guidelines:

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours.
  • Do not use strong antiperspirants or deodorants for 24 hours.
  • Avoid excessive heat exposure, such as saunas or hot showers, for 48 hours.
  • Refrain from vigorous exercise for 24–48 hours.

When will I see results?
  • Most patients notice an improvement in sweating within 3–7 days.
  • The full effect is usually visible within 2 weeks.
  • Results typically last between 4–6 months before repeat treatment is required.

Possible side effects

Botulinum Toxin is a safe and well-tolerated treatment, but mild side effects can occur, including:

  • Temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site.
  • Mild discomfort or a feeling of tightness in the area.
  • If treating the hands or feet, temporary weakness in nearby muscles may occur.

Serious side effects are very rare but may include allergic reactions or difficulty swallowing if Botulinum Toxin spreads beyond the intended area. If you experience any unusual symptoms, seek medical advice immediately.

Who should not have Botulinum  Toxin for Hyperhidrosis

Botulinum Toxin is not recommended for individuals who:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to botulinum toxin in the past.
  • Have neuromuscular conditions (e.g., Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome).
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have a skin infection or irritation in the treatment area.

Follow Up & Future Treatments

A follow-up appointment may be offered to assess your results. If necessary, additional treatments can be discussed.

To maintain results, repeat treatments are usually needed every 4–6 months.

Lifestyle tips to manage Hyperhidrosis

In addition to Botulinum Toxin, the following tips may help you manage excessive sweating:

  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing made from cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Use aluminum chloride-based antiperspirants on non-treated areas.
  • Carry wipes or absorbent pads to freshen up throughout the day.
  • Manage stress levels as anxiety can trigger excessive sweating.
