Laser hair reduction is a safe, effective laser treatment used to permanently reduce hair growth, available from Elements Medical for full body or facial hair removal. Based in Doncaster, our clinic is just a short drive away from surrounding areas Sheffield and Leeds, with parking available on site. We use The Quanta Thunder Series to provide the best hair removal treatments – the gold standard medical grade 4 laser machine.

Laser Hair Reduction in Doncaster

Laser hair reduction is one of the most in-demand aesthetic treatments available — and for good reason. The time, cost and skin irritation associated with a lifetime of shaving, waxing and threading add up significantly, and the appeal of a treatment that progressively and permanently reduces hair growth across a course of sessions is clear. At Elements Medical we use the Quanta Thunder Series — a medical-grade four-wavelength laser platform that represents the gold standard in professional laser hair reduction technology — to deliver safe, effective and long-lasting hair reduction across all treatment areas.

The laser works by targeting melanin — the pigment in the hair follicle — with precisely calibrated pulses of light energy. Because the energy is selectively absorbed by the pigment in the follicle rather than the surrounding skin tissue, the treatment destroys active follicles with precision while leaving the skin surface unaffected. This melanin-targeting mechanism is also why laser hair reduction works best on darker hair: the higher the melanin concentration in the follicle, the more effectively it absorbs the laser energy. The treatment is not effective on blonde, grey, white or red hair, which lack sufficient melanin to absorb the laser energy at a level that damages the follicle.

Because laser only targets follicles that are in the active anagen phase of the hair growth cycle at the time of treatment, multiple sessions are required to catch each follicle during its active phase. This is why a course of six sessions, spaced at the appropriate interval for the area being treated, is the standard recommendation — and why following the aftercare guidance precisely between sessions is important for achieving the best result.

Our Doncaster clinic is on Thorne Road with on-site parking, and we welcome patients from across South Yorkshire including Rotherham, Wakefield, Sheffield, Leeds and Barnsley.

What Is Laser Hair Reduction and How Does It Work?

Laser hair reduction uses focused light energy to permanently destroy the hair follicles responsible for hair growth, reducing or eliminating regrowth in the treated area over a course of sessions.

The Quanta Thunder Series laser produces light at wavelengths absorbed by melanin — the natural pigment that gives hair its colour. When the laser light reaches the hair follicle, the melanin in the follicle absorbs the energy and converts it to heat, which damages the follicle wall and destroys its ability to produce new hair. Because the energy is selectively absorbed by the pigment in the follicle rather than the surrounding skin, the surrounding tissue is unaffected.

Why multiple sessions are needed: Hair grows in three distinct cycles — anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional) and telogen (resting). Laser energy only effectively damages follicles that are in the active anagen phase at the time of treatment, because this is when the follicle is most closely connected to the hair shaft and most receptive to heat damage. At any given time, only a proportion of follicles in any area are in this active phase — which is why a course of sessions, spaced at intervals that capture the next wave of follicles entering the anagen phase, is required to progressively treat the full population of follicles in the area.

What happens after each session: Following treatment, the laser-damaged hairs do not fall out immediately. They remain in the follicle but the follicle has been destroyed, so they shed naturally over the seven to twenty-one days following treatment as the epidermis renews. This shedding — which can be encouraged by gentle exfoliation — is a normal and expected part of the process and indicates the treatment has worked on those follicles.

The clinical evidence for laser hair reduction using melanin-targeted light energy is supported by peer-reviewed research. British Journal of Dermatology — laser hair removal

How Is Laser Hair Reduction Treatment Performed? Step by Step

Before treatment:

  • A full consultation is held to assess your hair type, skin type, the areas to be treated and your suitability; the treatment plan and expected outcomes are discussed
  • A test patch is performed to confirm your skin and hair’s response to the laser before a full session proceeds
  • In the 24 hours before each session, shave the treatment area — do not wax, pluck or epilate, as this removes the follicle from the skin surface and prevents the laser from targeting it
  • Arrive at your appointment with clean, dry skin and no deodorant, moisturiser or makeup on the treatment area

During treatment:

  • A cooling gel or integrated cooling system is used to protect the skin surface and maximise comfort during treatment
  • The laser handpiece is passed systematically across the treatment area, delivering calibrated pulses of light to the full area being treated
  • Depending on the size of the area, treatment takes between 20 and 60 minutes
  • The sensation is typically described as a brief, warm snap — similar to a gentle elastic band flick — as each pulse is delivered. Most patients find treatment very comfortable

After treatment:

  • Mild redness and follicular swelling (small raised bumps around treated follicles) are normal and resolve within a few hours
  • Avoid heat, exercise, saunas, swimming and direct sun exposure for 48 hours after treatment
  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 to any treated area exposed to daylight throughout the course
  • Continue shaving between sessions as needed — do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate at any point during the course
  • Treated hairs shed progressively over 7–21 days following each session

The Purpose of Laser Hair Reduction

Every laser hair reduction course at Elements Medical serves three clear therapeutic purposes.

1. Restoring Freedom from the Time and Physical Impact of Temporary Hair Removal

A lifetime of shaving, waxing and threading is not simply a cosmetic inconvenience — for many people it is a significant drain on time, money and physical comfort, with skin irritation, ingrown hairs, razor rash and the constant cycle of regrowth creating an ongoing and frustrating burden. Laser hair reduction addresses this at its root, progressively and permanently disabling the follicles responsible for unwanted hair growth and restoring a smooth, hair-free result that does not need to be repeated every few days. The freedom from the shaving and waxing cycle that a completed course delivers is a genuine and meaningful improvement in daily quality of life.

2. Maintaining Hair-Free Skin With Minimal Ongoing Effort Following the Initial Course

Once a full course of six sessions is complete, the majority of treated follicles are permanently disabled and will not produce new hair. The ongoing maintenance requirement is minimal compared to temporary hair removal — for most patients, one or two annual top-up sessions is sufficient to address any residual follicles or new growth stimulated by hormonal changes or other factors. This is a fundamentally different relationship with unwanted hair than the endless cycle of temporary removal methods — one that requires far less time and money in the long run.

3. Protecting Confidence and Psychological Wellbeing by Addressing a Persistent Source of Self-Consciousness

Unwanted facial or body hair is a source of significant self-consciousness for a large proportion of people, affecting how comfortable they feel in social situations, in relationships and in their own skin. The impact is particularly pronounced for facial hair, where visibility is constant and where temporary removal methods are often unsatisfying or impractical. The progressive improvement in smooth, hair-free skin across a laser reduction course — and the confidence that comes with it — has a direct and meaningful positive effect on psychological wellbeing and self-esteem that patients consistently describe as among the most significant benefits of the treatment.

Proven Benefits of Laser Hair Reduction

Permanent reduction of hair growth across a course of six sessions Each session in the course progressively disables active hair follicles, producing a cumulative reduction in hair growth that, once the course is complete, results in a long-lasting and largely permanent reduction in hair in the treated area.

Medical-grade Quanta Thunder Series laser technology Elements Medical uses the Quanta Thunder Series — a medical-grade four-wavelength laser platform — for all laser hair reduction treatments, providing the precision, power and safety profile required to deliver effective results across a range of skin and hair types.

Treats all areas of the face and body Laser hair reduction is available for every area of the face and body — from small precise areas such as the upper lip, chin or between the brows, to large body areas including the full legs, back, chest and abdomen.

Comfortable and well tolerated without anaesthetic The brief pulse sensation during treatment is minimal and very well tolerated without anaesthetic. The integrated cooling system on the Quanta Thunder Series maximises comfort throughout each session.

Minimal downtime — return to normal activities immediately Mild redness and follicular swelling resolve within a few hours of treatment and most patients return to normal activities the same day. The only restriction is avoiding heat and direct sun exposure for 48 hours.

Significant time and cost saving over a lifetime The cumulative cost of a lifetime of waxing, threading and shaving far exceeds the investment in a laser course. Once the course is complete, the time and expense of regular temporary hair removal is eliminated or dramatically reduced.

Packages available for the most popular area combinations Three bundled hair removal packages — Ultra Smooth, Super Smooth and Smooth — offer the most popular combinations of underarm, bikini and leg treatment at a saving compared to booking individual areas separately.

Which Areas Can Laser Hair Reduction Treat?

Laser hair reduction at Elements Medical is available for every area of the face and body. Treatment areas are grouped by size for pricing purposes:

Laser Hair Reduction vs IPL Hair Removal — What Is the Difference?

Laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) are both light-based technologies used for hair reduction, but they differ in their mechanism and clinical performance.

Laser uses a single, specific wavelength of light that can be focused and concentrated with precision, delivering a more powerful and targeted energy pulse to the hair follicle. This greater precision and energy concentration generally makes laser more effective than IPL for hair reduction — particularly for finer or lighter-coloured dark hair, and for treating larger areas efficiently.

IPL uses a broad spectrum of wavelengths that are filtered, delivering a less concentrated but broader energy pulse. IPL can be effective for hair reduction at appropriate settings but is generally considered less powerful than dedicated laser platforms for this application.

At Elements Medical we use dedicated medical-grade laser technology — the Quanta Thunder Series — for hair reduction rather than IPL, to provide the most effective and efficient treatment available for this concern.

Laser Hair Reduction vs Waxing — Is It Worth It?

Waxing produces smooth results immediately after each session, but the hair returns fully within two to four weeks and the cycle must be repeated indefinitely. Over a lifetime, the time, cost and discomfort of regular waxing accumulates substantially — and waxing actively removes the follicle from the skin surface between laser sessions, which is why it must be avoided entirely during a laser course.

Laser hair reduction requires an upfront investment of six sessions over several months, but the result — a lasting and largely permanent reduction in hair growth — eliminates or dramatically reduces the need for ongoing hair removal after the course is complete. For most patients, the long-term time and cost saving of laser over waxing is significant, and the quality of the result — progressively smoother skin that improves with each session — is substantially better than any temporary method.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Laser Hair Reduction?

Laser Hair Reduction (LHR) works as the Laser Light is selectively absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair follicle. The light energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cells.

How Is the treatment carried out?

The Laser is placed on the skin and short pulses of light are released; this targets the hair follicle simultaneously. This is repeated until your section of concern has been treated.

What should I expect the treatment to feel like?

This treatment is often compared to the sensation of a flick of an elastic band; this is very mild and is well tolerated.

What should I expect to see after treatment?

The hair will remain as follicles, but the heat has destroyed them, so you should see the dead hairs shed after 7-21 days as the epidermis renews.

How many treatments will I need?

We always recommend a course of 6 or more treatments in order to see optimum results

Am I the right candidate for this treatment?

Most people are suitable; best results are achieved on those who have a darker hair follicle, this is because dark hair has a higher concentration of melanin. A full consultation and patch test is required prior to any treatment and you will fill a medical health questionnaire out to help us determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment. This treatment will NOT work on grey/ white or red hair. You can NOT have this treatment is you use a sunbed. You must have NOT had any sun exposure to your targeted area in at least 4 weeks because your the laser will treat your skins melanin rather than the hair.

How do I make an appointment ?

To make a booking, please call our reception team on 01302 34 34 32 and they will be happy to book you a consultation and patch test. The cost of this consultation and patch test is 20 and we take this on booking, this will also act as your booking deposit. If you decide to go ahead with a course of treatments then this will be redeemable against the total cost.
