Thread veins on the face are extremely common. The delicate network of superficial capillaries just below the skin surface can become permanently dilated and visible as a result of sun exposure, genetic predisposition, skin trauma, temperature extremes, hormonal changes or simply the natural ageing process — and once they are visible, they tend to remain so and can multiply over time. They most commonly appear across the nose, cheeks and chin as fine red or pink lines or clusters, and can significantly affect the overall evenness and clarity of the skin’s appearance.
IPL is the treatment of choice for facial thread veins at Elements Medical. Its mechanism is a precise match to the concern: the filtered broad-spectrum light energy delivered by IPL is absorbed selectively by oxyhaemoglobin — the pigment in red blood cells — in the visible blood vessels, converting to heat within the vessel and causing it to contract and close. The body’s lymphatic system then clears the closed vessel over the weeks following treatment, leaving the treated area progressively clearer as the course advances.
Results vary between patients — many see thread veins disappear entirely, while others see a significant reduction in appearance. A small number of patients do not achieve the result expected from a course alone and may benefit from additional sessions. New thread veins can develop over time, particularly where the underlying factors that caused the original vessels are still present, and periodic maintenance sessions help keep these in check.
Our Doncaster clinic is on Thorne Road with on-site parking, and we welcome patients from across South Yorkshire including Rotherham, Wakefield, Sheffield, Leeds and Barnsley.
Thread veins — also called spider veins, broken capillaries or telangiectasia — are small, dilated blood vessels that have become permanently visible through the surface of the skin. They appear as fine red, pink or purple lines, often in a branching or radiating pattern, and are most commonly seen on the nose, cheeks and chin.
They develop when the walls of superficial capillaries weaken or lose their elasticity, causing the vessel to dilate permanently and become visible through the skin. A number of factors contribute to this:
Sun exposure is one of the most significant causes — UV radiation damages the collagen that supports blood vessel walls and causes cumulative vascular damage over time, which is why thread veins are so common in sun-exposed areas of the face.
Genetics and skin type play a strong role — fair skin with naturally thinner vessel walls is more prone to visible thread veins, and a family history of the concern is a common finding.
Hormonal changes — including pregnancy and hormonal fluctuations — can cause vascular changes that result in new thread veins developing.
Ageing progressively reduces the structural support around superficial blood vessels as collagen and elastin decline, making vessels more likely to dilate and become visible.
Trauma and temperature extremes — including flushing, extreme cold or heat, and skin trauma — can all contribute to the development of visible facial vessels.
Understanding the factors that have contributed to your thread veins allows your practitioner to advise on the most appropriate maintenance approach after your treatment course is complete.

Every IPL thread vein course at Elements Medical serves three clear therapeutic purposes.
1. Restoring a Clearer, More Even Skin Tone by Removing Visible Facial Blood Vessels
The primary purpose of IPL thread vein treatment is to remove the visible broken capillaries and spider veins that are disrupting the evenness and clarity of the skin’s appearance. By targeting the haemoglobin in these vessels with precise light energy, IPL closes and clears the treated vessels, restoring a smoother, more even complexion in the areas where the thread veins were visible. For patients who have carried visible broken capillaries for years — often with no effective treatment option available to them through skincare — the improvement from a completed course of IPL can represent a genuinely significant transformation in how their skin looks and how they feel about it.
2. Maintaining Clearer Skin Through Periodic Maintenance and Protective Habits
The vessels treated through a course of IPL are closed and do not return — but thread veins are a skin tendency rather than a one-off event, and where the contributing factors (sun exposure, genetics, ageing) are ongoing, new vessels can develop over time. Maintaining the results of an IPL course requires consistent daily broad-spectrum SPF use, sensible sun avoidance, and periodic maintenance sessions to address any new vessels as they appear before they become more established. Approached this way, IPL forms part of a long-term skin maintenance programme that keeps the skin looking as clear and even as possible over time.
3. Protecting Confidence and Psychological Wellbeing by Addressing a Persistent and Visible Cosmetic Concern
Visible thread veins on the face — particularly on the nose and cheeks — are a source of significant self-consciousness for many people. Because they cannot be covered effectively with makeup and are visible at close range in everyday interactions, they have an ongoing and cumulative impact on confidence and how comfortable people feel in social and professional situations. The ability to have them effectively treated with a comfortable, in-clinic, no-downtime option that produces genuinely visible results directly addresses this confidence impact, and the improvement in self-assurance that patients report after a course of IPL thread vein treatment is among the most consistent and strongly expressed outcomes we hear.
1. Directly targets visible blood vessels using light energy absorbed by haemoglobin IPL’s filtered light energy is absorbed selectively by oxyhaemoglobin in the targeted vessels, closing them with precision while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
2. Treats thread veins across the nose, cheeks, chin and full face IPL thread vein removal is effective across all facial areas where broken capillaries and spider veins commonly develop — from isolated vessels on the nose tip to a broader distribution across the cheeks and chin.
3. Minimal downtime — return to normal activities the same day Mild redness following treatment typically resolves within 24 hours and most patients return to normal activities immediately. No recovery window is required.
4. No anaesthetic needed — comfortable and well tolerated The brief pulse sensation during treatment is minimal and very well tolerated without anaesthetic. Most patients find IPL thread vein treatment straightforward and comfortable throughout.
5. Many patients see complete disappearance of treated vessels A significant proportion of patients see treated thread veins disappear entirely following a course of IPL, rather than simply fade — particularly for finer, more superficial vessels.
6. Precise treatment of discrete vessels and broader areas IPL can be targeted precisely at small, discrete thread veins — such as a single vessel on the nose — as well as applied across broader areas with more diffuse vascular redness. Both presentations respond well to treatment.
7. Results maintained with periodic sessions and daily SPF Treated vessels are cleared by the body and do not return. Where new vessels develop over time due to ongoing contributing factors, periodic maintenance sessions keep them in check and the overall result well maintained.
Thread Veins on the Nose
The nose — particularly the tip and sides — is one of the most common sites for visible broken capillaries and spider veins. These vessels are often very fine and well defined, and tend to respond particularly well to targeted IPL treatment. Even a single session can produce visible improvement in nose thread veins, with a full course achieving a more comprehensive result.
Thread Veins on the Cheeks
Visible thread veins across the cheeks often appear in a broader, more diffuse pattern than those on the nose, and may be associated with a more general background redness. IPL is effective for both the discrete vessel component and the associated diffuse redness, with each session building on the previous to produce a progressively clearer and calmer complexion across the cheeks.
Thread Veins on the Chin
The chin is a less common but not infrequent site for visible broken capillaries, particularly in patients with a general tendency to facial thread veins. IPL treats the chin area as a discrete zone within a broader treatment plan, or as a standalone area for patients with isolated chin vessel concerns.
Broken Capillaries Associated with Rosacea-Prone Skin
Many patients with rosacea-prone skin present with a combination of diffuse background redness and more discrete visible broken capillaries. IPL addresses both components, and the treatment approach for rosacea-associated thread veins and for isolated broken capillaries in otherwise calm skin is discussed and tailored at consultation.
Spider Veins and Visible Facial Vessels Following Sun Damage
Long-term sun exposure is a major contributor to facial thread veins, and patients with a history of significant sun exposure often present with a broader distribution of visible vessels across sun-exposed areas of the face. IPL is well suited to addressing sun-damage-related facial vascular changes as part of a broader skin improvement programme.
IPL for rosacea and IPL for thread veins use the same technology targeting the same vascular chromophore — oxyhaemoglobin — but the two treatments are approached differently based on the nature of the concern.
IPL for thread veins is primarily focused on discrete, individually visible broken capillaries and spider veins — specific vessels with a defined location and appearance that are targeted for clearance.
IPL for rosacea addresses the more diffuse, widespread background vascular redness of rosacea-prone skin across broader areas of the face, where the concern is less about specific individual vessels and more about the overall level of persistent facial redness and reactivity.
In practice the two concerns frequently coexist in the same patient, and a treatment programme may address both simultaneously or in sequence. Your practitioner will assess your specific presentation at consultation and recommend the most appropriate approach.
Sterex electrolysis is an alternative treatment for small facial vessels that uses a fine probe to deliver a precise electrical current directly into individual thread veins. It is effective for very fine, isolated vessels that are well defined.
IPL is better suited when thread veins cover a broader area — across the cheeks or as a general facial distribution — because it treats the full treatment zone with each pass rather than requiring individual vessel-by-vessel treatment. For isolated single vessels or very fine capillaries in a small defined area, Sterex may offer a complementary or alternative approach. Your practitioner will advise at consultation on which is the most appropriate treatment for your specific presentation, or whether a combination approach would serve you best.
At Elements Medical, every IPL thread vein course begins with a thorough consultation and test patch — because the appropriate parameters for treating visible facial vessels vary between patients, and a careful assessment of your skin type, vessel characteristics and treatment area is essential before any full session begins.
We are honest about realistic outcomes: many patients see treated vessels disappear entirely, while others see a significant reduction. A small number require additional sessions beyond the initial course. We discuss this clearly at consultation so you begin treatment with accurate expectations.
Our complete IPL range also includes IPL for rosacea, IPL for pigmentation, and IPL for skin rejuvenation.

Spider or thread veins on the face can be caused by a number of factors. Some are environmental, some physical, and some genetic. Sun damage, pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations, genetics, ageing, and even excessive alcohol consumption can all lead to thread veins.
Fine spider veins or thread veins on the face can be treated by IPL. We will be able to do a thorough assessment during a consultation and assess the efficacy of treatment. Book a consultation today!
IPL for thread veins feels a little bit like an elastic band being snapped against the skin. It is very tolerable. We will consult a patch test before we carry out the treatment to be sure you are happy.
The veins that are treated will be permanently reduced. However, if you are prone to getting them or have environmental factors that may make you develop them you may see new ones appearing. These, too, can be treated.
You may experience some redness after the procedure but this should reduce within 24 hours.
