Lip enhancement is consistently one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in the UK — and also one of the most misunderstood. The fear of ending up with lips that look overdone, unnatural or completely unlike your own features is one of the most common concerns we hear from patients who have been considering treatment for some time but have hesitated.
At Elements Medical, our philosophy on lip filler is straightforward: the result should always look like you, only more so. Lips that are subtly fuller, better defined and more harmonious with the rest of your face. Lips that draw a compliment rather than a question. That is the standard we hold every treatment to.
Our approach begins with understanding what your lips actually need. For some patients that is volume — building fullness in lips that have always been naturally thin. For others it is definition — sharpening the vermillion border or enhancing the cupid’s bow without dramatically changing the size. For older patients, it is often restoration — addressing the volume loss and perioral lines that develop with age and returning the lips to a more youthful softness.
Our Doncaster clinic is on Thorne Road with on-site parking. We welcome patients from across South Yorkshire including Wakefield, Rotherham, Sheffield, Leeds and Barnsley.
Lip enhancement — often referred to as lip filler or lip augmentation — is a non-surgical treatment in which hyaluronic acid dermal filler is injected into the lips and the surrounding perioral area to improve their volume, shape, definition and symmetry.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that retains moisture and gives tissue its soft, supple quality. It is the same substance used in all of our dermal filler treatments and is fully reversible — it can be dissolved at any time using an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
Lip filler can be placed in several different areas of the lip depending on your goals:
During your consultation, your practitioner will assess your lips, your overall facial proportions and your goals, and will recommend exactly where filler will be most beneficial for you.

Lip filler works by injecting small, precise amounts of hyaluronic acid gel into the lips and surrounding structures. The gel adds volume where it is placed and integrates naturally with the surrounding tissue, creating a result that looks and feels soft, natural and entirely your own.
Here is what to expect from your lip enhancement appointment at Elements Medical:
Every lip enhancement treatment at Elements Medical is guided by three clear therapeutic purposes.
1. Restoring Volume, Shape and a More Youthful Lip Appearance
The lips change significantly with age. Hyaluronic acid in the lip tissue naturally reduces over time, causing the lips to thin, flatten and lose their defined border. The philtrum ridges soften, the cupid’s bow flattens, the vermillion border becomes less distinct and fine lines begin to appear around the mouth. These changes can make the face look older and more drawn than it feels from the inside. Lip filler directly addresses all of these changes — restoring volume, reshaping the border and returning the lips to a more youthful, hydrated and defined appearance.
2. Maintaining Comfortable Skin Health and Lip Integrity
The skin around the lips is some of the thinnest and most actively used on the face. Supporting the lips and perioral area with hyaluronic acid helps to maintain tissue hydration, support the lip border and reduce the progression of perioral lines. Regular maintenance of lip volume and definition helps to keep the lips and surrounding skin looking healthy, smooth and well-supported over time — without requiring dramatic amounts of product at any single visit.
3. Protecting Confidence and Psychological Wellbeing
The lips are one of the most expressive and emotionally significant features of the face. For patients who have always been self-conscious about thin or asymmetrical lips, the impact of lip filler on confidence can be profound and immediate. For older patients who have watched their lips thin and their lip line disappear, restoring that definition can feel like reclaiming a part of their appearance they had quietly mourned. These are real and valid emotional responses to changes in appearance, and they are always part of our consultation conversation. Feeling good about your lips — in photographs, in everyday life and in the mirror — genuinely matters.
Here is why lip filler remains one of the most sought-after treatments at Elements Medical.
1. Adds natural-looking fullness and volume — lips that have always been naturally thin, or that have thinned with age, are gently and proportionately plumped to a fullness that suits your face. The result looks and feels entirely natural — soft, hydrated and beautifully your own.
2. Defines and sharpens the lip border — a clean, defined vermillion border gives the lips their shape and prevents lipstick from bleeding. Filler placed along this border creates crisp definition that frames the lips beautifully and makes the mouth look more polished and put-together even without makeup.
3. Enhances the cupid’s bow and philtrum — for patients who want a more sculpted, characterful lip shape rather than simply more volume, enhancing the cupid’s bow and restoring the philtrum columns creates a beautifully defined upper lip that is expressive and distinctive without looking overdone.
4. Softens perioral lines — the fine vertical lines that develop around the mouth with age can be significantly softened by adding gentle support to the lip border and the perioral skin. This is one of the most sought-after results for patients in their forties, fifties and beyond.
5. Immediate results with minimal downtime — you will see an improvement as soon as treatment is complete. Swelling typically settles within 48 to 72 hours and the final result is visible at two weeks. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.
6. Completely tailored to your face and proportions — lip filler is not one-size-fits-all. The volume, placement and shape are designed specifically around your lips, your facial proportions and your personal goals. Our aim is always an outcome that enhances what you already have rather than creating something that looks borrowed from someone else.
7. Boosts confidence and emotional wellbeing — lips are intimately connected with self-expression, attractiveness and how we present ourselves to the world. When your lips look fuller, more defined and more like the best version of themselves, the impact on confidence and daily self-assurance is consistently one of the most positive responses we see. This is what makes lip filler one of our most beloved treatments.
Lip filler is a remarkably versatile treatment. During your consultation, your practitioner will assess your lips and discuss which of the following is most relevant to you.
Thin or Naturally Small Lips
For patients who have always had naturally thin or small lips, filler can add the fullness and volume they have always wanted — in a way that is genuinely proportionate to their face rather than dramatically altered.
Age-Related Volume Loss
From the mid-thirties onwards, the lips naturally lose volume and definition. This thinning process can feel gradual until one day the lips in the mirror look noticeably different from the ones in old photographs. Filler restores this lost volume and returns the lips to a more youthful softness and fullness.
Undefined Lip Border
A blurring of the vermillion border — the defined edge of the lip — can make the mouth look unstructured and cause lipstick to bleed. Filler placed precisely along this border creates a clean, defined outline.
Asymmetry
No two lips are perfectly symmetrical, but when one side is noticeably fuller, higher or more defined than the other it can be a significant source of self-consciousness. Targeted filler placement can balance the lips and create a more even, harmonious result.
Flat Cupid’s Bow
The cupid’s bow — the double curve at the centre of the upper lip — naturally flattens with age or may simply be less defined in some patients. Enhancing this area creates a more sculpted, expressive upper lip.
Perioral Lines (Smokers’ Lines)
Fine vertical lines around the mouth can be addressed by placing filler gently into the perioral area and along the lip border to provide support and smooth the skin. This is not just about smokers — these lines are a natural consequence of the repeated muscle movements of speaking, smiling and eating, and they affect virtually everyone to some degree with age.
Downturned Corners of the Mouth
As the corners of the mouth descend with age, they can give a resting expression that appears sad or disapproving. Filler placed at the oral commissures can lift and soften these corners for a more neutral, relaxed and open expression.
This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive about lip treatments, and it is worth explaining clearly.
A lip flip uses a tiny amount of botulinum toxin (the same product as anti-wrinkle injections) placed just above the upper lip to relax the muscle that causes the lip to curl inward when you smile. As the muscle relaxes, the upper lip rolls very slightly outward, giving the appearance of a fuller, more visible upper lip — without adding any actual volume. The effect is subtle and typically lasts around 8 to 12 weeks.
Lip filler adds genuine volume, structure and definition to the lips using hyaluronic acid. The results are more significant, last considerably longer (6 to 9 months), and can address a much wider range of concerns — including lower lip volume, lip border definition, cupid’s bow shape and perioral lines.
The two treatments are not interchangeable, but they can complement each other. Patients with a small upper lip that rolls inward when they smile sometimes benefit from a lip flip alongside their filler for maximum upper lip visibility. Your practitioner will advise on the best approach during your consultation. See our Lip Flip page for more information.
One of the most common questions patients ask before their first lip filler appointment is how much product they will need. At Elements Medical, we offer two volumes: 0.5ml and 1ml.
0.5ml is the ideal starting point for first-time lip filler patients, those with already reasonable lip volume who want a subtle enhancement, or anyone who wants to build gradually and conservatively. It adds a noticeable but very natural improvement — more definition, a touch of fullness and a refreshed appearance without dramatic change.
1ml is suitable for patients who want a more significant result, those with naturally thin lips or more pronounced age-related volume loss, or patients who have had 0.5ml previously and want to build on their result. It is also the standard volume for our Anti-Ageing Package.
The right volume depends entirely on your lips, your goals and what your practitioner assesses as proportionate to your face. We will never suggest more product than is right for you, and we always work conservatively — it is far easier to add a little more at a future appointment than to undo too much.
Permanent lip augmentation procedures — such as surgical lip implants or fat transfer to the lips — involve surgical intervention under local or general anaesthetic and produce long-lasting or permanent changes to the lips.
Lip filler using hyaluronic acid is entirely non-surgical and temporary. The filler is gradually broken down by the body over 6 to 9 months, and the lips return naturally to their original state. Hyaluronic acid filler can also be dissolved at any time using hyaluronidase — meaning the treatment is completely reversible.
For the vast majority of patients, the non-surgical approach is preferable: the results are controllable, reversible, and can be adjusted and refined at each visit as your goals evolve. The temporary nature of the treatment is a feature, not a limitation — it means your lips can always evolve alongside your preferences, and nothing is ever locked in permanently.
Lip filler requires exceptional skill, a genuine aesthetic eye and deep respect for the natural anatomy and proportions of the face. The lips are the most scrutinised feature on the face, and a result that looks overdone, uneven or disproportionate is immediately visible.
At Elements Medical, every lip enhancement is performed by experienced aesthetic practitioners who take a careful, conservative and anatomically informed approach. We assess your lips and your face as a whole before recommending the right volume and technique. Our goal is always an outcome that suits your individual features — not a uniform result that looks the same on every patient.
We never over-treat. If we think 0.5ml is the right volume for you, that is what we will recommend — regardless of what you might have expected. And if we think lip filler is not the right treatment for your concern, we will tell you honestly and suggest a better alternative.
We are based on Thorne Road in Doncaster with on-site parking, and welcome patients from across South Yorkshire including Wakefield, Rotherham, Sheffield, Leeds and Barnsley.

Topical Cream Or Dental Block
Lip enhancement — also known as lip filler or lip augmentation — is a non-surgical treatment that uses hyaluronic acid dermal filler to add volume, shape and definition to the lips. It can increase overall lip fullness, sharpen the lip border, enhance the cupid’s bow, soften perioral lines and restore age-related volume loss.
Lip filler at Elements Medical uses hyaluronic acid — a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains moisture in the tissue, giving lips their soft, supple, hydrated quality. It is fully biocompatible and completely reversible.
Lip filler can be uncomfortable without anaesthetic, but at Elements Medical we offer two options to ensure you are as comfortable as possible: a topical numbing cream applied 30 minutes before treatment, or a dental block in which anaesthetic is injected into the gums to completely numb the mouth. Most patients who choose the dental block feel very little during the procedure itself.
The full appointment takes between 30 and 60 minutes, including time for anaesthetic to take effect. The injection element is typically 15 to 30 minutes depending on the volume and areas being treated.
Results typically last between 6 and 9 months, though this varies between individuals. Factors such as metabolism, sun exposure, use of sunbeds and smoking can affect how quickly filler breaks down. Staying well hydrated helps keep the lips looking fuller for longer.
Some degree of swelling and bruising is normal after lip filler and is most pronounced in the first 24 to 48 hours. The majority of swelling settles within 48 to 72 hours, with the final settled result visible at around two weeks.
Yes — when the treatment is performed by an experienced practitioner taking a conservative, proportionate approach. At Elements Medical, our goal is always a result that looks like your lips, only more beautiful. We work to enhance your natural features rather than create a look that is obviously treated.
Not with the approach we take at Elements Medical. Overfilled, unnatural-looking lips are the result of too much product, poor technique or a failure to respect the natural proportions of the face. We take a careful, conservative approach and never add more volume than is right for your individual anatomy. If you are worried about this, please raise it during your consultation — it is one of the most common concerns we hear and one we take seriously.
0.5ml is ideal for subtle enhancement, first-time patients or those with already reasonable lip volume who want a natural improvement. 1ml is suited to patients wanting more significant volume, those with naturally thin lips or more pronounced age-related thinning, or those building on a previous 0.5ml result. Your practitioner will advise on the right volume for your lips during your consultation.
A lip flip uses botulinum toxin to relax the muscle above the upper lip, causing it to roll slightly outward for the appearance of a fuller upper lip — without adding any volume. Lip filler adds genuine volume and definition using hyaluronic acid. The two treatments are different but complementary — your practitioner can advise on which is right for you, or whether a combination of both would give the best result.
Yes. Hyaluronic acid lip filler can be dissolved at any time using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This makes the treatment completely reversible. We also offer a dedicated Dissolve & Redesign package for patients who want to remove existing lip filler and start fresh with a new treatment plan.
Yes. Lip filler is frequently combined with anti-wrinkle injections for the forehead or frown lines as part of our Anti-Ageing Package, and also works well alongside skin boosters to improve overall skin quality. We can advise on the best combination during your consultation.
Most healthy adults are suitable for lip filler. During your consultation, we review your medical history, examine your lips and discuss your goals in detail. If lip filler is not right for you, we will let you know and suggest an alternative.
No. Dermal filler treatments are not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please speak to us about timing your treatment.
As the hyaluronic acid gradually breaks down over time, the lips return naturally to their original appearance. There is no deflation, sagging or negative effect on the lips — they simply go back to how they looked before treatment.
Yes. We offer a Dissolve & Redesign package for patients who have existing lip filler — whether from another clinic or from a previous visit to us — that they would like to remove and replace. We dissolve the existing product and then, after four weeks, inject fresh filler (1ml) to create a clean, well-planned result from scratch. Please mention this during your consultation so we can plan accordingly.
