Gummy smile treatment is a quick, non-surgical procedure that uses botulinum toxin to reduce the amount of gum that shows when you smile. It works by gently relaxing the muscle in the upper lip that pulls it too high, so your lip sits in a more natural, balanced position when you smile. The treatment takes around 15 minutes, costs just £50 and requires no downtime at all.
If showing too much gum when you smile is something that makes you feel self-conscious, you are not alone. It is one of the most common smile-related concerns we hear about at Elements Medical. Many of our patients tell us they have spent years covering their mouth when they laugh, avoiding photographs or holding back from smiling naturally. That kind of daily self-consciousness takes a real toll on how you feel about yourself.
The good news is that it is a very simple thing to treat. At our Doncaster clinic, we deliver every gummy smile treatment within a medically led framework. We begin with a consultation to understand your concern, assess your smile and make sure this is the right treatment for you. Our approach is always tailored, honest and focused on giving you a result that feels natural and right for your face
Elements Medical is located on Thome Road in Doncaster with on-site parking. We welcome patients from across South Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Wakefield, Leeds and York.
A “gummy smile” is the common term for a smile that shows more gum than you would like above your upper teeth. There is no strict definition of how much gum is “too much,” because it is really about how it makes you feel. Some people are perfectly happy showing a lot of gum, while others feel very self-conscious about even a small amount.
In most cases, a gummy smile is caused by an overactive muscle in the upper lip called the levator labii superioris. When this muscle is stronger or more active than average, it pulls the upper lip up higher than usual when you smile, exposing more of the gum line.
It can also be made more noticeable by a naturally thin upper lip, which provides less coverage over the gums. In some cases, a combination of gummy smile treatment and subtle lip enhancement can yield the best overall result, which we can discuss during your consultation.
A gummy smile is not a health problem or anything to worry about physically. But for the people it affects, it can have a real impact on confidence, social comfort and overall happiness with their appearance.
The treatment is beautifully simple. A very small amount ofbotulinum toxin is injected into the muscle that lifts the upper lip too high when you smile. The botulinum toxin gently relaxes this muscle, so it does not pull the lip up as far. The result is a smile that shows less gum and more of your teeth, in a way that looks completely natural and balanced.
Here is what happens during your appointment:
The effects start to develop over the following days and the full result is usually visible within 2 weeks. We recommend avoiding touching or massaging the area for around 6 hours after treatment.
At Elements Medical, every treatment we offer is guided by a clear purpose. Gummy smile treatment is not just about changing the way your smile looks. It serves three meaningful purposes that shape how we plan and deliver your care.
For patients whose overactive lip muscle creates an excessive gummy smile, the treatment restores a more balanced and proportionate smile line. By relaxing the muscle that pulls the lip too high, we bring the smile back to a more natural position where the upper lip gently rests over the gum line as it should. Many patients describe the result as their smile finally matching how they always felt it should look.
Once you have achieved a smile you are happy with, regular maintenance treatments help you keep it. The effects ofbotulinum toxin are temporary, lasting around 4 to 6 months, but with consistent treatment the muscle often becomes less overactive over time, meaning results can last longer between sessions. Maintaining your treatment protects the improved smile you have worked to achieve.
The emotional impact of a gummy smile is something we take very seriously. Many of our patients tell us that their gummy smile has affected their confidence for years, sometimes since childhood. They avoid smiling in photos, cover their mouth when they laugh and feel self-conscious in social or professional situations. These are not small things. By correcting the gummy smile, we often see a remarkable shift in how our patients feel about themselves. They smile more freely, feel more at ease and carry themselves with greater confidence. That emotional transformation is just as important to us as the physical result.
Here is why so many of our patients are delighted with their gummy smile treatment.
1. A more balanced, natural smile – by reducing the amount of gum on show, your smile looks more proportionate and polished. Your teeth become the focal point rather than your gums, and the overall effect is a smile that looks harmonious and natural.
2. An instant confidence boost – this is the benefit our patients talk about the most. Being able to smile freely without worrying about how much gum is showing makes a real difference to everyday life. From
3. Quick, simple and affordable – the whole treatment takes around 15 minutes, costs just £50 and involves no surgery, no downtime and no recovery period. You can have it done on your lunch break and go straight back to work feeling great.
4. Non-surgical and fully reversible – unlike surgical gummy smile corrections, this treatment uses botulinum toxin which wears off naturally over time. If for any reason you decide it is not for you, your smile will simply return to how it was before. There is no permanent change and no risk of an irreversible outcome.
5. Your teeth look straighter and more even – this is a benefit that surprises many of our patients. When less gum is visible, the teeth appear more prominent, more even and better proportioned. Several of our patients have said their teeth actually look straighter after treatment, even though nothing about the teeth themselves has changed.
This treatment is a great option for anyone who feels self-conscious about showing too much gum when they smile. You might be a good candidate if:
The treatment works best when the gummy smile is caused by an overactive upper lip muscle. During your consultation, we will assess your smile to confirm this and make sure the treatment is right for you. If we think a different approach would give you a better result, we will always be upfront about that.
Most healthy adults are suitable for this treatment. It is not recommended if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an allergy to botulinum toxin products.
The experience is quick and comfortable. Here is a step-by-step look at what happens.
Before your treatment, we carry out a full consultation. We will ask you to smile naturally so we can assess the size and activity of the muscle responsible. We will discuss the outcome you are hoping for and explain exactly what the treatment involves, so you know what to expect.
During the treatment, a very fine needle is used to inject a small amount ofbotulinum toxin on both sides of the nose, just above the nose-to-mouth fold. The injections take only a few seconds and most patients say they barely feel a thing. No anaesthetic is needed.
After the treatment, you can leave the clinic and carry on with your day as normal. We simply ask that you avoid touching or rubbing the treated area for around 6 hours. You should also avoid strenuous exercise and lying flat for the rest of the day.
The full results develop over the following 1 to 2 weeks as the botulinum toxin takes effect and the muscle gradually relaxes.
You will start to notice the effects within a few days, with the full result visible at around 2 weeks. The change is subtle but really effective. Your upper lip will sit in a more relaxed, natural position when you smile, showing less gum and more of your teeth.
Results typically last between 4 and 6 months, which is longer than many standard anti-wrinkle injection treatments. This is because the muscle treated is small and responds well to even a small dose ofbotulinum toxin.
With regular treatment, many patients find that the muscle becomes less overactive over time, meaning the results can last even longer between sessions. Some patients who have been having the treatment consistently for a year or more report that they need it less frequently as time goes on.
When the effects do wear off, your smile will simply return to how it was before. You will not look any different from how you did before your first treatment.
Sometimes a gummy smile and a thin upper lip go hand in hand, and patients are unsure which treatment they need. Here is the difference.
Gummy smile treatment uses botulinum toxin to relax the muscle that lifts the upper lip too high. It reduces the amount of gum you show when you smile but does not change the size or shape of your lip itself.
Lip filler (lip enhancement) adds volume to the lip using hyaluronic acid gel. It can make the upper lip fuller and more defined, which in turn provides more coverage over the gum line.
If your gummy smile is mainly caused by an overactive muscle, the botulinum toxin treatment is usually the best first step. If a thin upper lip is also contributing to the problem, adding a small amount of lip filler can enhance the result even further.
This is another question we are asked frequently, because the two treatments both involve the upper lip and use botulinum toxin.
Gummy smile treatment is specifically aimed at reducing gum show. The botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle that lifts the upper lip too high when you smile. The goal is to lower the resting position of the lip when smiling, so less gum is visible.
A lip flip uses botulinum toxin along the border of the upper lip itself. The goal is slightly different. It causes the lip to gently roll outward, giving the appearance of a fuller upper lip without any filler. It does not specifically target gum show. See our Lip Flip page for more details.
Some patients benefit from both treatments together. If you are unsure which is right for you, we will help you work it out during your consultation.
A gummy smile correction is a subtle treatment, but it needs to be done well. The placement and dose of the injections must be precise to give you a natural result that still lets you smile fully and expressively. Getting this wrong can leave the lip feeling heavy or the smile looking asymmetrical, which is why the skill and experience of your practitioner really matters.
At Elements Medical, every treatment is delivered by experienced, medically trained practitioners who understand facial anatomy and take pride in delivering natural, balanced results. We never rush. We take the time to assess your smile properly, understand what you want and make sure the treatment is right for you.
We are also honest. If we think your gummy smile would be better addressed with lip filler, a lip flip, or a combination approach, we will tell you. Our priority is always giving you the best possible outcome, not selling you a treatment.

A gummy smile is when a larger than usual amount of gum tissue is visible above the upper teeth when you smile. It is usually caused by an overactive muscle in the upper lip that pulls the lip too high. It is very common and nothing to worry about physically, but many people feel self-conscious about it.
The most common cause is an overactive upper lip muscle (the levator labii superioris) that lifts the lip higher than average when you smile. It can also be more noticeable if you have a naturally thin upper lip, which provides less coverage over the gums.
A small amount ofbotulinum toxin is injected into the muscle that lifts the upper lip too high. This gently relaxes the muscle, so your lip sits in a more natural position when you smile, showing less gum and more of your teeth.
Botox is one brand name for botulinum toxin, which is the product used in gummy smile treatment. Other brands include Azzalure and Bocouture. They all work in the same way.
Very little. The needle is extremely fine and the injection itself takes only a few seconds on each side. Most patients say it is barely noticeable. No anaesthetic is needed.
The treatment itself takes around 10 to 15 minutes, including the consultation. It is one of the quickest aesthetic treatments available.
You will start to notice the effects within a few days, with the full result visible at around 2 weeks.
Results typically last between 4 and 6 months. With regular treatment, many patients find the results last longer over time as the muscle becomes less overactive.
Gummy smile treatment at Elements Medical costs £50. It can also be added to an anti-wrinkle injection appointment for just £30 as an additional area.
Yes. The effects ofbotulinum toxin are temporary. If you decide not to continue with treatment, your smile will simply return to how it was before. There is no permanent change.
Yes, and many patients do. If a thin upper lip is contributing to your gummy smile, adding a small amount of ,liQ filler can complement the results beautifully. We can advise on this during your consultation.
Absolutely. Many of our patients add gummy smile correction to their regular anti-wrinkle injection appointment. It only takes a few extra minutes and can be added for just £30.
Gummy smile treatment targets the muscle that lifts the lip too high, reducing gum show. A lip flip causes the upper lip to gently roll outward, creating the appearance of a fuller lip. They target different concerns but can be combined.
Most healthy adults are suitable. We assess your smile during a consultation to make sure the treatment is appropriate for you. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Your smile will gradually return to how it was before. There are no lasting changes and no negative effects from stopping.
