Lip Blush is a form of cosmetic tattooing in which pigment is carefully implanted into the upper layers of the lips using a specialist semi-permanent makeup device.
Unlike traditional tattooing, Lip Blush is designed to fade gradually over time, giving a softer and more natural-looking result.
The treatment can enhance what you already have rather than dramatically changing your lips. It can help define the lip border, improve colour, balance slight asymmetry and give pale or uneven lips a healthier-looking flush.
The finished result can range from a barely-there natural tint to a more noticeable lip colour, depending on your preference.
Lip Blush may be a good choice if you would like to:
Choosing the right colour is an important part of your Lip Blush treatment.
During your consultation, we will look at your natural lip tone, complexion and the shades you usually feel comfortable wearing.
You might prefer a soft nude, pink, rose or slightly warmer tone. We will work with you to select a pigment that complements your colouring and gives you the type of result you are looking for.
Remember that Lip Blush is not designed to look like heavy lipstick. Once healed, the colour softens considerably and becomes part of the natural appearance of your lips.
Lip Blush can also be used to create greater definition around the natural lip border and make the lips appear more balanced.
Before treatment begins, your lip shape will be carefully mapped so that you can see the proposed outline.
Small differences in symmetry may be improved by carefully adjusting the shape within the natural lip tissue.
Lip Blush does not create additional physical volume in the way that dermal filler does. Instead, improved colour and definition can make the lips appear more noticeable and better defined.
Your appointment begins with a consultation to discuss your medical history, previous treatments and what you would like to achieve.
We will then look at:
Your lips will then be carefully mapped and the shape agreed with you before treatment begins.
Pigment is gradually introduced into the lips using a specialist semi-permanent makeup device. Several passes may be required to build an even colour throughout the treatment area.
Immediately afterwards, the lips will usually look brighter, darker and more intense than the final healed result. This is completely normal.
Lip Blush goes through a healing process before the final colour can be properly assessed.
The lips may appear brighter and more strongly coloured than expected. Mild swelling, redness or tenderness may also occur.
The lips may feel dry or tight and light flaking or peeling can occur as the skin begins to heal.
It is important not to pick or remove any peeling skin, as this may affect how the pigment heals.
The colour will begin to soften and may temporarily appear much lighter than expected.
This is a normal part of the healing process.
As the skin settles, the pigment gradually becomes more visible again and the final colour is softer and more natural than it appeared immediately after treatment.
Your practitioner will advise when your healed result should be assessed and whether a refinement appointment is recommended.
Semi-permanent makeup is a process rather than an exact result achieved in a single appointment.
Different skin and lip types retain pigment differently, and some areas may heal lighter than others.
A follow-up treatment allows us to assess how your lips have retained the pigment and refine the colour or definition if required.
It also allows the result to be built gradually rather than trying to create too much colour during the initial treatment.
Lip Blush is semi-permanent and gradually fades over time.
Results can commonly remain visible for around 1 to 3 years, although this varies considerably between individuals.
How long your Lip Blush lasts can be affected by:
Many patients choose to have a colour refresh periodically to maintain their preferred shade and definition.
Lip Blush and lip filler are completely different treatments.
Lip Blush enhances the colour, shape and definition of your natural lips. It does not physically add volume.
Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid dermal filler to physically add or restore volume, alter shape and improve lip proportions.
Some patients may benefit from one treatment, while others choose to have both at different times.
If you are considering lip filler as well as Lip Blush, speak to our team so that the treatments can be planned in the correct order with appropriate time between appointments.
Lip Blush may be suitable if you:
Every treatment begins with a consultation to make sure Lip Blush is appropriate for you.
It is important that you tell your practitioner about your full medical history, medications, allergies and any previous cosmetic or semi-permanent makeup treatments.
You should also tell us if you have a history of cold sores or herpes simplex around the lips, as Lip Blush can potentially trigger a recurrence. Your practitioner can advise you about this before treatment and whether you should speak to your GP or pharmacist about appropriate preventative treatment.
Lip Blush may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or where there is active infection, inflammation or broken skin around the treatment area.
Your suitability will be assessed individually during consultation.
Good aftercare is important to allow your lips to heal properly and help achieve the best possible pigment retention.
Following treatment, you will be given detailed aftercare instructions.
You will usually be advised to:
Once healed, using sun protection around the lips can also help reduce premature fading of the pigment.
Whether you want to add a soft hint of colour, improve definition or simply make your natural lips look a little fresher, Lip Blush offers a subtle way to enhance the lips you already have.

Approximately 2 to 3 hours, including consultation, colour selection, mapping and treatment.
Colour is visible immediately but will soften significantly as the lips heal. The final healed result is assessed once the healing process is complete.
Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness, dryness, flaking and a stronger initial colour are all common following treatment.
Minimal, although the lips will go through a visible healing period.
Usually immediately, although some swelling and a brighter lip colour should be expected initially.
A topical numbing product may be used where appropriate to make the treatment more comfortable.
Lip Blush is a semi-permanent makeup treatment that introduces pigment into the lips to enhance their natural colour, shape and definition.
That depends on the result you choose. Lip Blush can be extremely subtle, giving the lips just a soft wash of colour, or the pigment can be built to create a more noticeable result.
The healed colour is always softer than it appears immediately after treatment.
No. Lip Blush does not physically add volume to the lips.
By defining the lip border and improving the overall colour and shape, it may make the lips appear more defined, but it cannot create the volume that would be achieved with dermal filler.
Lip Blush can help improve the appearance of minor asymmetry and create a more balanced lip outline.
However, pigment should remain within the natural lip tissue and there are limits to how much asymmetry can safely and naturally be corrected.
Your practitioner will discuss this with you during your consultation.
Yes. Your colour will be selected with you before treatment.
We will take into account your natural lip pigment, skin tone, the shades you normally wear and how subtle or defined you would like your finished result to be.
Freshly implanted pigment naturally appears stronger and more intense.
As the lips heal, the colour softens significantly. This is why you should never judge the final result from how your lips look immediately after treatment.
Some dryness, flaking or light peeling is normal during the healing process.
It is important to allow this to happen naturally and not pick at the lips, as removing healing skin prematurely can also remove pigment
Lip Blush commonly lasts around 1 to 3 years, although pigment gradually fades and every patient retains colour differently.
A colour refresh can be carried out when you feel your Lip Blush needs brightening or redefining.
A refinement appointment is commonly recommended following semi-permanent makeup because pigment retention varies from person to person.
Your healed result will determine whether additional colour or definition is needed.
Possibly, but it is very important that you tell us before treatment.
Lip treatments can trigger the herpes simplex virus in people who are prone to cold sores. We may recommend that you speak with your GP or pharmacist before treatment regarding appropriate preventative medication.
In many cases, yes.
However, your previous treatment and timing will need to be discussed before booking. If you are planning both lip filler and Lip Blush, we can advise you on the most appropriate order and interval between treatments.
