The skin’s structural quality is determined by its collagen and elastin network — the web of protein fibres in the dermis that gives skin its firmness, elasticity and resilience. From our mid-twenties, collagen production begins a gradual and continuous decline, and the structural quality of the dermal matrix progressively diminishes as a result. Fine lines deepen, the skin loses the firmness that kept it taut, pores appear larger as the surrounding collagen support weakens, and the overall quality and texture of the skin changes in ways that become increasingly visible over time.
RF microneedling addresses this directly at the dermal level — not at the surface, but in the tissue layer where the structural changes are actually occurring. By delivering radiofrequency energy precisely into the dermis through microneedles, the treatment creates a controlled thermal injury at the depth where new collagen formation and remodelling is triggered. The body responds by producing new, structurally sound collagen and elastin, progressively restoring the dermal architecture that age has eroded. The outcome is a quality of skin improvement — genuine tightening, firming and textural refinement — that surface-level treatments and skincare products cannot replicate because they do not reach the dermis.
At Elements Medical, RF microneedling is performed using the Focus Dual by Lynton — one of the most clinically advanced RF microneedling platforms available. Its vacuum stabilisation technology, non-insulated needle design and precise RF delivery settings allow the treatment to be calibrated with a level of accuracy and safety that produces consistently strong results across a range of skin types and concerns.
Our Doncaster clinic is on Thorne Road with on-site parking, and we welcome patients from across South Yorkshire including Rotherham, Wakefield, Sheffield, Leeds and Barnsley.
RF microneedling combines two distinct treatment mechanisms into a single pass of the treatment handpiece:
Microneedling: Ultrafine needles penetrate the skin to a precisely calibrated depth, creating controlled micro-channels in the dermis. These micro-injuries trigger the skin’s wound-healing response — fibroblasts are activated, new collagen is synthesised and the skin’s repair mechanisms begin the process of structural renewal. The needle channels also create pathways through which any topical actives applied immediately post-treatment can penetrate more deeply than they would through intact skin.
Radiofrequency energy: Simultaneously, as the needles penetrate the dermis, radiofrequency energy is delivered directly through the needle tips into the surrounding tissue. This creates a controlled thermal effect in the dermis — heating the collagen fibres and causing them to contract and remodel, while also stimulating fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. Because the RF energy is delivered at depth through the needle tips rather than penetrating from the surface, it acts precisely at the dermal level without the surface disruption that laser resurfacing produces.
The dual effect: The combination of mechanical micro-injury and thermal RF stimulation produces a more powerful and comprehensive collagen remodelling response than either mechanism achieves alone. The mechanical stimulus triggers cellular repair and collagen synthesis; the thermal stimulus accelerates and deepens the remodelling response and adds a genuine skin-tightening effect through collagen contraction. The result is a treatment that improves both the surface texture of the skin and the structural quality of the dermis simultaneously.
The Focus Dual’s non-insulated needles: Unlike some RF microneedling devices that use insulated needles — which only deliver RF energy at the needle tip — the Focus Dual’s non-insulated needles are active along the full length of the needle shaft. This produces volumetric heating throughout the full depth of the needle track, creating a more comprehensive thermal stimulus and consequently a stronger collagen remodelling response throughout the entire treatment depth, not just at a single point.

The primary purpose of RF microneedling is to restore the structural quality of the dermis by triggering a deep and sustained new collagen and elastin formation response. This is not a surface treatment — it works at the level of the dermis where the structural changes responsible for laxity, wrinkling and textural deterioration actually originate. The new collagen produced in response to RF microneedling is genuinely structural: it restores the density and architecture of the dermal matrix, producing tighter, firmer skin and a smoother surface texture that reflects a real improvement in the physical quality of the skin rather than a temporary cosmetic effect.
The collagen remodelling response triggered by RF microneedling develops and matures over the 12 weeks following each treatment session, and the results from a course of three sessions build cumulatively — each session adding to and deepening the remodelling response established by the previous one. Maintaining the structural improvement achieved through a course requires ongoing attention to skin quality — whether through annual or biannual maintenance RF microneedling sessions, complementary skin booster treatments or an appropriate active skincare regime. Your practitioner will advise on the most appropriate maintenance plan following the completion of your initial course.
Skin laxity, deepening lines and a loss of the firm, smooth quality that characterised younger skin are among the most significant and most self-consciousness-inducing visible signs of ageing for many people — and for a long time, the only meaningful option for addressing them was surgical. RF microneedling provides a non-surgical route to the kind of structural skin improvement that was previously only achievable with a facelift or resurfacing procedure — producing genuinely visible tightening and firming results without surgery, general anaesthetic or a meaningful recovery period. The confidence that comes from seeing your skin look firmer, smoother and more youthful following a course of RF microneedling is grounded in a real and lasting structural change.
Combines two proven collagen-stimulating mechanisms in a single treatment RF microneedling delivers both the mechanical collagen stimulus of precision microneedling and the thermal collagen stimulus of radiofrequency energy simultaneously, producing a more powerful and comprehensive remodelling response than either technology achieves alone.
Treats skin laxity and tightens loose, crepey skin The thermal RF energy causes immediate collagen fibre contraction and triggers sustained new collagen formation, producing a progressive and genuine tightening of lax skin across the face, neck and body over the weeks following each session.
Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles Deep dermal collagen remodelling progressively fills and smooths the structural basis of fine lines and wrinkles, producing a visible improvement in the depth and appearance of surface wrinkling over the course.
Improves skin texture, enlarged pores and overall skin quality The collagen and elastin remodelling stimulated by RF microneedling progressively refines skin texture, reduces the appearance of enlarged pores and improves the overall quality, firmness and radiance of the skin surface.
Improves the appearance of scarring The combination of mechanical micro-injury and thermal RF stimulation produces a significant remodelling response in scar tissue, progressively improving the appearance of post-breakout scarring, surgical scars and other textural irregularities over a course of sessions.
Minimal downtime — return to normal activities within 24–48 hours Mild redness and warmth typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours, and most patients return to normal social and professional activities within this window. The absence of a significant recovery period makes RF microneedling a practical option for people who cannot accommodate extended downtime.
Results continue to develop for up to 12 weeks after each session The collagen remodelling response triggered by each RF microneedling session continues to mature for up to 12 weeks post-treatment. Consequently, the full result of a three-session course is not seen until approximately 12 weeks after the final session — with progressive improvement across the entire post-course period.
RF microneedling is particularly effective for addressing skin laxity — the loss of firmness and structural support that produces sagging, crepey or loose skin across the face, jaw, neck and body. The thermal RF energy contracts existing collagen fibres and stimulates the formation of new, structurally sound collagen, progressively restoring the dermal support that has been lost through ageing. For patients with mild to moderate laxity, a course of RF microneedling produces a quality of structural tightening that reflects a genuine improvement in the dermal architecture.
By stimulating deep dermal collagen remodelling, RF microneedling progressively improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles across the face — including periorbital lines around the eyes, perioral lines and broader facial wrinkling. Results develop over weeks to months as the remodelling response matures following each session.
The collagen support surrounding each pore directly influences its visible size — as collagen density reduces with age, pores appear larger. Restoring collagen density through RF microneedling progressively tightens the skin around enlarged pores, reducing their appearance and refining the overall texture of the skin surface.
The combination of mechanical micro-injury and deep thermal RF stimulation produces a powerful remodelling response in the fibrous tissue of post-breakout scars, progressively improving their appearance and integrating them more evenly with the surrounding skin. RF microneedling is effective across a range of atrophic scar subtypes and is suitable for all skin types.
The neck and décolletage are areas where skin quality often deteriorates earlier than the face — crepey, thin skin with horizontal lines and loss of firmness are common concerns. RF microneedling applied to the neck and décolletage produces a meaningful improvement in the structural quality and appearance of skin in these areas over a course of sessions.
Standard microneedling uses precision needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering a wound-healing and collagen synthesis response. It is effective for improving skin texture, pore appearance, fine lines, post-breakout scarring and overall skin quality, with minimal downtime and a very good tolerability profile.
RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy delivery through the needle tips simultaneously, creating a thermal stimulus deep in the dermis that significantly amplifies the collagen remodelling response and adds a genuine skin-tightening effect that standard microneedling does not produce. The thermal RF component is what makes RF microneedling particularly effective for skin laxity — a concern that standard microneedling addresses only partially through collagen stimulation alone.
The choice between the two depends primarily on your concern. For mild textural improvement, fine lines and skin quality without significant laxity, standard microneedling may be the more appropriate and proportionate starting point. For patients with visible skin laxity, deeper wrinkling or a more significant structural concern, RF microneedling’s dual mechanism produces a stronger and more comprehensive result. Your practitioner will advise at consultation.
Both RF microneedling and NeoGen Plasma address structural skin quality concerns through energy-based remodelling, but they work through different mechanisms and sit at different levels of treatment intensity.
RF microneedling delivers energy directly into the dermis through needle penetration, producing a deep collagen remodelling response with minimal surface disruption. Downtime is 24 to 48 hours of mild redness. It is particularly well suited to skin laxity, wrinkling and textural concerns.
NeoGen Plasma uses nitrogen plasma energy at the skin surface and can range from a minimally ablative treatment with one to three days of downtime to a fully ablative session with seven to ten days of recovery, producing results comparable to CO2 laser at high energy. It is more appropriate for significant photodamage, deeper surface resurfacing and patients who can accommodate a meaningful recovery period.
For most patients with laxity, fine lines and textural concerns who want effective results without significant downtime, RF microneedling is the more proportionate and accessible option. NeoGen Plasma becomes the appropriate step-up when more extensive resurfacing is required.
CO2 laser resurfacing is the most powerful resurfacing option at Elements Medical, producing significant ablative resurfacing with seven to ten days of recovery and results that address deeper wrinkling, scarring and photodamage comprehensively.
RF microneedling produces a strong dermal remodelling response without ablating the surface, making it appropriate for patients who want meaningful structural improvement without a prolonged recovery window. It is an excellent option for skin laxity and textural improvement where the surface does not require ablative resurfacing.
The two treatments are not directly comparable — they address different dimensions of skin quality. CO2 laser resurfaces the skin surface comprehensively; RF microneedling remodels the dermal structure. For patients with both surface photodamage and structural laxity, a sequential combination of the two — with appropriate timing between them — may produce the best overall result. Your practitioner will discuss this at consultation.
At Elements Medical, RF microneedling is performed using the Focus Dual by Lynton — a medical-grade platform with vacuum stabilisation technology for precise needle placement, non-insulated needles for full-depth volumetric heating, and a wide range of needle depth and RF intensity settings that allow the treatment to be precisely calibrated for each patient’s skin type, concern severity and treatment area.
Every RF microneedling treatment begins with a thorough consultation to assess your skin, confirm the appropriate parameters and ensure the treatment is the right choice for your goals. We offer RF microneedling as part of a complete skin treatment range that also includes standard microneedling, NeoGen Plasma, CO2 laser and LaseMD, and will always recommend the treatment that is genuinely best matched to your skin and goals.

Ultrafine needles penetrate the skin to different depths whilst simultaneously releasing radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat the skin in a controlled manner, stimulating a wound healing response leading to the production of new collagen and elastin.
Our patients love how natural their skin looks and the results get better and better over time.
Yes, younger skin that doesn’t yet require lifting and tightening can benefit from Microneedling without the RF, where the focus is now more on refining pores, evening out texture and improving overall quality.
Older patients with laxity concerns benefit from the dual effect of the Microneedling with Radiofrequency. As the Focus Dual offers many different needle depths and intensity settings for RF, treatments can be easily customised for every different skin and level of concern.
Results can be seen after just one session. However, a minimum of 2 and up to 6 treatments, at 4-week intervals, deliver the best results, depending on the skin concern.
Most patients see an improvement 2 to 3 weeks after the first treatment. Results are natural and get better over time, peaking at 12 weeks following the final treatment.
There is virtually no downtime. A slight swelling and redness are present immediately post-treatment and should subside quickly.
